News JVTech Mark Zuckerberg has to worry, the developers are not convinced by his project

The CEO of Meta is still facing reluctance about his most ambitious project. If we already knew that the metaverse was not necessarily expected by a majority of Internet users, we now learn that the developers are not enthusiastic about the idea of this 3D world boosted with virtual reality either.

Meta, formerly Facebook, is continuing work on its metaverse project. However, the term still does not pass, especially among professionals…

According to a recent report called “State of the Game Industry 2023”, a good part of developers in the video game industry are still not convinced by the metaverse. Specifically, nearly half of the developers surveyed believe that the metaverse will not deliver on its promises. If 33% of them had this observation in 2022, today they are 45% to think so.

Several arguments support this position. First, a majority of current users cannot enjoy an optimal immersive experience due to a lack of accessibility to VR headsets. Indeed, this type of equipment is still little democratized because of its high cost. When we consider the current market share of iPhones despite their price, this hurdle seems surmountable. However, for this, it is necessary that the metaverse offers an attractive experience and interoperability could be the key.

In addition to this still distant notion, the work required to develop an immersive universe seems pharaonic, as this developer points out in the report:

“For many years, games have focused on core gameplay, graphical fidelity, networking, etc. What they haven’t focused on is creating interactive environments. Unfortunately for the VR industry, VR games virtually require dense environments with small interactive objects to deliver a AAA equivalent experience. »

Despite recent progress, there is still a long way to go for the metaverse to be considered a true revolution. This could also come from another giant than Meta. Indeed, although the company is considered a 36% leader in VR with the Meta Quest headset, the developers surveyed consider Epic Games and its game Fortnite as the most legitimate to offer this type of experience.

Since the emergence of the term, the metaverse has been used all over the place, but it defines more or less an ultra-immersive universal digital universe in which Internet users can interact and do multiple activities – a mirror of reality in short.

This famous metaverse has become dear to the eyes of Mark Zuckerberg who took the trouble to rename Facebook to Meta a little over a year ago. Through this initiative, the CEO of Meta largely wishes to advance in the development of this concept which is still in its embryonic state. Thus, he also offered his first vision of the metaverse with his application Horizon Worlds.

Nevertheless, as we know, this first experience did not convince users who expected to see a digital world like the promises put forward in the media. Moreover, a good part still does not seem to understand what the term metaverse means, as indicated by a recent study by GetApp.

Thus, it would seem that there are still a few years of investment and research for the metaverse to succeed in convincing the developers – a first step before attracting users eventually.
